Welcoming Spring, Celebrating Aries #astrology

Spring began at 3:28AM, Pacific Time, today March 20, as the sun moved into the zodiacal sign of Aries. This is the beginning of the astrological year, so Aries is the first sign of the Zodiac. (Back in the old days, they calculated the year from vernal equinox until the next vernal equinox.)

As such, Aries is considered the “baby” of all the signs. It’s the one that represents individualism and ego. People born under this sign are sometimes thought to be self-centered, just as the infant thinks himself the center of the universe, as he or she indeed is. Personally, I don’t think people born under the sign of Aries are any more infantile or self-centered than other signs, but maybe I’m biased since this is my sun sign. Aries isn’t the only one who likes to be the center of attention, right, Leo? Hm, maybe that’s why my cousin Beverly and I didn’t get along as children. (She’s a Leo.)

ramAries’s symbol is the Ram, its ruler is Mars, and it’s a cardinal fire sign, so there’s often nothing subtle about Aries, and women born under this sign are no exception. Consider Joan Crawford and Bette Davis. It’s also interesting that the actresses who played Xena and Buffy the Vampire Slayer are both Aries. People born under the sign do kind of tend to go after what they want in a single-minded, head down, look out kind of way. It’s a good thing the Ram has strong horns. Aries people can be headstrong, impulsive, and hot-tempered, but also warm-hearted, generous and idealistic.

Compatible signs include the other fire signs, Leo and Sagittarius, and the air signs of Gemini, Libra and Aquarius. I married an Aquarian and it was a pretty good match. His rational calm kept me from racing off the edge of a cliff, while my need to get out and go kept him from falling into too much of a rut!

Famous people born under the sign of Aries include Otto Von Bismark, Marlon Brando, Charlie Chaplin, Russell Crowe, Sarah Michelle Geller, Harry Houdini, Thomas Jefferson, Ahley Judd, Lucy Lawless, Clare Booth Luce, Nikita Khrushev, Eugene McCarthy, Andrew Mellon, J. P. Morgan, Gloria Swanson, Vincent Van Gogh, Werner Von Braun and Tennessee Williams.

Is there an Aries in your life?

Most people don’t know that I used to be a serious student of astrology, and I still find it interesting. I used to do a monthly astrology post at my other blog, and I think I’ll resurrect it here. Watch for Taurus next month!

Happy St. Paddy’s Day (Not St. Patty)

I love St. Patrick’s Day. Who wouldn’t love a day that celebrates the Irish, usually with a round or two of beer? Mine will be brown, however, not green.

March 17

Save the date white block calendar for St Patrick’s Day, March 17, with Leprechaun hat, pot of gold, and rainbow, on green background.

I do have one pet peeve with the way this holiday is celebrated in the US. I cringe every time I walk into a restaurant and see a sign advertising “St. Patty’s Day” specials. Patty is short for Patricia. The proper nickname for Patrick is Paddy, a name once used pejoratively for Irishmen. Now there may be a St. Patricia, and she may have her own special day, I wouldn’t know, I’m not Catholic. But please stop emasculating St. Patrick! After all, he was a gentleman, according to an old sea shanty.

St. Patrick's Cathedral

St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin, Ireland,

My heritage is about half Irish, though of the Northern, Protestant, Orange variety, who celebrate the 12th of July more than March 17th. When I was growing up in Pittsburgh, my mother and grandmother always insisted we should wear orange on St. Patrick’s Day. Never mind that I look better in green! Then we moved to Southern California and I quickly discovered that not wearing green on March 17th meant complete strangers would pinch you. I rarely made that mistake again. Besides, I look like death warmed over in orange. So I will be wearing Green today.

In 2015, I cruised around the British Isles and spent several days in Ireland. Here are some photos of my favorite Irish places.

Here’s my own St. Patrick’s Day wish for you:

On St. Paddy’s Day,
My wish for you
Is a large bowl
Of Irish stew.
And a pint or two
Of your favorite brew.

And may you be an hour in heaven before the devil knows you’re gone!

What are you doing for St. Patrick’s Day?
