She’s So Sexy: Rogue’s Hostage #MySexySaturday #MFRWauthor

My Sexy Saturday bannerThis week’s theme for My Sexy Saturday is “I’m So Sexy and there’s nothing more interesting that someone who exudes sexiness but doesn’t flaunt it.” I had to think about this theme for a bit, then it occurred to me that it fit Mara, the heroine of Rogue’s Hostage. Mara is a minister’s daughter who has no idea how sexy she seems to the French officer who took her captive. Here’s a snippet from a scene in which she gets dressed up to meet an emissary from the English army, leaving Jacques fuming.

She looked gorgeous in the damn gown.

Jacques glared at Mara, who sat across the room, flirting with the English emissary, an impossibly young-looking ensign. They spoke quietly in English, and Jacques wondered what secrets she was imparting to him. Not that the young man in the scarlet uniform was paying attention to what she said. He was obviously too dazzled by her beauty.

The deep blue of the silk brought out the color of her eyes, and the low-cut bodice made her bosom look as white as cream and as soft as down.

Jacques swore under his breath. It was inevitable that one day they would be separated. But not yet, he swore, not while he still hungered for her so.

“Stop scowling,” Alain’s voice murmured in his ear. “It’s not wise to wear your heart on your sleeve.”

“What makes you think my heart is the interested part?” Jacques quipped.

Alain roared with laughter. “Is your petit soldat at attention again? Ah, my friend, you must try not to be so obvious.”

Memories of Fall Colors, Pt. 2 #MFRWhooks #MFRWauthor

MFRW Authors Blog

For last Wednesday’s MFRW Book Hooks, I shared some memories of autumn in Western Pennsylvania, the setting for my Historical Romance, Rogue’s Hostage. When I was a child, I loved to watch the leaves on the trees change color and drop off. We had maple trees on our street and the colors were spectacular. Today’s snippet continues that scene.

red fall leaves

Lord, but she was morbid today. Her mood was due to a combination of weather and circumstance and surely would be temporary. She glanced at the view again, wishing Emile were here to see it. He would have been enchanted by the vista.

The fragrance of autumn, clear, crisp, and tangy, wafted on the air. Soon, very soon, winter’s frost would snuff out autumn’s fire, leaving the landscape bleak and brown until the first snowfall came to shield it with a pristine layer of white.

A flock of birds flew overhead, heading south for the winter. Mara watched them with envy, wishing she, too, could soar over the treetops.
