Linda’s LOL Funny #MFRWAuthor 52-Week Blog Challenge

It’s Week 18 of the #MFRWAuthor 52-Week Blog Challenge and the prompt is “What makes me laugh out loud?”

Where shall I start? I do love to laugh, sometimes inappropriately. I frequently find irony and satire quite amusing, which means I sometimes laugh out loud when politicians spew some nonsense I know they don’t mean or is incorrect. But I won’t go there today, though I will admit to being an avid fan of The Daily Show, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, Full Frontal with Samantha Bee and Real Time with Bill Maher. I still miss Jon Stewart.

I don’t watch a lot of the current sit coms, but love The Big Bang Theory. The show never fails to make me laugh out loud, even the repeats. I like that the show is so smart as well as funny with quality writing and acting. My husband was a physicist, and I sometimes see glimpses of him in the characters, particularly Leonard, and before I met him I briefly hung out with a bunch of guys who remind me even more of our geeky foursome, complete with Ren Faire costumes.

12 clues of ChristmasI also enjoy humorous novels, esp. the fluffier mysteries or Regency romances. No matter how many times I read Georgette Heyer, I find myself laughing out loud. My current favorite mystery series is the Royal Spyness series by Rhys Bowen. The books are just hilarious, and I found The Twelve Clues of Christmas to be particularly clever as well as funny.

Funny quotes make me laugh, also. The other day I started talking about the series Dallas with the receptionist at the dentist’s office and she quoted J. R. Ewing:

“Once you get rid of integrity, the rest is a piece of cake.”

Though I laughed, I was aware how true that quote seems to be nowadays.

What makes you laugh?

  1. I see my former father-in-law in Sheldon Sad, I know. I haven’t tried the Royal Shyness series yet, but I’ve been meaning to. Off to pick one up!

  2. I haven’t watched The Big Bang Theory yet but I know it has a huge following. Your list touches on some of the same things that make me laugh out loud. As far as repeats, sometimes they’re better the second time around. Enjoy your weekend, Linda.

    • I guess sometimes we’re laughing so much the first time through, we miss some of the best lines.

    • Me, too, Kenzie. In fact I had to wait until TBBT went into syndication to really watch it, because I used to work every Thursday evening at the library and didn’t get home till 9:30.

  3. I love John Oliver! His show does make me laugh often. I don’t watch any sitcoms, but I know of The Big Bang Theory. I’ve seen an episode in passing but that’s about it. The character that does the Intel commercials now always seemed interesting.

    • John Oliver is terrific! I love his show. The guy who does the Intel commercials is Jim Parsons who plays Dr. Sheldon Cooper in TBBT. He’s a a brilliant comic actor.

  4. I love John Oliver and Jon Stewart but I usually listen to monologues on You Tube so am never really current. The only comedy I watch on TV at the moment is IZombie. But anything that makes us laugh has to be good for us.

  5. I miss Jon Stewart too. He changed the face of late night TV. The Big Bang Theory works too. Just differently. Started watching SNL again as well. That’s still on and off.
